Many studies have shown that bilingualism, in training a greater cognitive flexibility, improves the vocabulary, analytical and logical skills of the child.

Bilingual children naturally move between one system of symbols and another. They have a greater capacity for abstract reasoning, which gives them an advantage when constructing concepts and resolving problems. Bilingual children also find it easier to learn new languages.

Bilingualism encourages openness to others. The result of this is that children will be better prepared for life in a multi-cultural society.

At La Canopée, two teachers share lessons equally, expressing themselves in their first language. This strict separation according to the rule ‘one teacher, one language’ allows a structured learning approach. This immersion, solely in one language at a given time, imitates the natural conditions for first language learning.

New students who are not bilingual will participate in extra-curricular activities on Wednesday afternoons as long as is necessary, in order to aid their integration.

For some classes, children will be divided according to their ability in each language. This allows the program to be adapted to the linguistic level of the children and lessons are planned according to these needs.
